{"id":3151,"date":"2025-12-05T12:36:27","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T11:36:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tva-international.it\/?p=3151"},"modified":"2025-12-09T11:52:00","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T10:52:00","slug":"netherlands-2026-new-distance-based-toll-for-lorries-introduced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tva-international.it\/en\/news\/netherlands-2026-new-distance-based-toll-for-lorries-introduced\/","title":{"rendered":"Netherlands 2026: Introduction of the New Distance-Based Truck Toll System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The transition to a model based on <strong>actual distance travelled<\/strong> represents a significant change for all transport companies that regularly transit or operate in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<h2>How the New Toll System Will Work<\/h2>\n<p>The toll calculation will be based on three main components:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Distance travelled<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vehicle weight category<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CO\u2082 emissions class<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This approach aims to encourage fleet renewal towards more efficient solutions with less environmental impact, promoting the long-term spread of low- or zero-emission vehicles.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tariffs: How Much Will Road Hauliers Pay?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The cost per kilometre will mainly depend on:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vehicle weight<\/strong><br \/>\n(Guidelines for determining the permitted technical weight are available on the website of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure..)<\/p>\n<p><strong>CO\u2082 emissions class<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Determination of the CO<\/strong><strong>\u2082 <\/strong><strong>class<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>According to Dutch legislation, the toll service provider will determine the vehicle&#8217;s emission class.:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vehicles registered before 1 July 2019<\/strong> \u2192 CO\u2082 class 1 (based on data from the registration certificate)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zero-emission vehicles (100% electric)<\/strong> \u2192 CO\u2082 class 5<\/p>\n<p><strong>All other cases<\/strong> \u2192 Determination via the RDW register or documents provided by the owner (CVO, CIF, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>If the vehicle already has a CO\u2082 classification in another European toll system (Germany, Belgium, Austria), this will also be recognised in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Approved indicative rates (April 2025)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Here are some examples of cost per kilometre:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trucks 16 t\u00a0\u2013 Euro 6 \u2192 0.156 \u20ac\/km<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trucks 16 t \u2013 Electric \u2192 0.034 \u20ac\/km<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trucks &gt;32 t\u2013 Euro 6<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>0,195 \u20ac\/km<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trucks &gt;32 t \u2013 Electric \u2192 0.038 \u20ac\/km<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The final rates for 2026 may be adjusted in line with inflation.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mandatory OBUs: From 2027, only 4G devices<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To drive in the Netherlands, every truck must be equipped with a certified<strong> OBU (On-Board Unit)<\/strong>, either national or EETS, which automatically records the kilometres travelled.<\/p>\n<p>This has already been confirmed by the authorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From 31 December 2027, only OBUs compatible with 4G technology will be accepted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Companies will therefore have to:<\/p>\n<p>check the devices currently in use,<\/p>\n<p>organise any updates or replacements,<\/p>\n<p>ensure full compliance within the specified deadlines.<\/p>\n<p>A delay could result in penalties and <strong>possible operational disruptions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>End of the Eurovignette: Obligation to Register with a Toll Service Provider<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the deactivation of the Eurovignette, all operators will be required to:<\/p>\n<p>Register with a <strong>certified toll service provider<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Equip each vehicle with a <strong>compatible OBU<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Monitor updates and official communications from the Dutch authorities<\/p>\n<p>This transition phase requires careful planning, especially for businesses that frequently operate in the Netherlands..<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparing for 2026: Why It Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The introduction of the new remote toll system could have a significant impact on transport companies<strong>\u00a0operating costs<\/strong>, administrative procedures and operational organisation.
